This summer I started studying Danish with a native teacher at VikingRO.

I already had a couple of years of Norwegian behind me. The two are close enough that the second one feels less like a climb and more like a stretch. The pronunciation is the punishing part. Everything else is workable.

Why Danish, specifically:

  1. I like Nordic languages.
  2. It’s hard. The hard part is the point.
  3. Language is a bridge to people and culture. You don’t really get either without it.
  4. They say it slows down Alzheimer’s. Worth a shot.
  5. I like the things the Vikings got right: exploration, courage, pragmatism, flat hierarchy, everyone pulling in sync when we want the drakkar to move.

That last one is the one I keep coming back to.

Tak for nu.
